Best Practice Framework focus of Asia-Pacific FLS Consensus Meeting in Taipei

The Asia-Pacific Region Fracture Liaison Service Consensus Meeting focused on shared experience and input on the Best Practice Framework, with participation by experts from across the region.

The Asia-Pacific Region Fracture Liaison Service Consensus Meeting was held in Taipei, Taiwan on Oct. 14, 2017 in conjunction with the 2017 Annual Meeting of the Taiwanese Osteoporosis Association (TOA). The Meeting, endorsed by the Asian Federation of Osteoporosis Societies (AFOS), International Osteoporosis Foundation (IOF), and TOA, brought together leading Fracture Liaison (FLS) experts from the region and beyond.

The attendees reviewed the 13 standards in the Capture the Fracture® Best Practice Framework (BPF), a guidance document which is critical to the development and improvement of FLS in the Asia-Pacific region. They also shared their national and local experiences with FLS and provided input on how the BPF can be enhanced. At the same time some challenges unique to the region or to specific countries were discussed. A consensus paper arising from the Meeting will be submitted to an osteoporosis-related journal for possible publication.

Attending experts also included Prof. Peter Ebeling (Australia), Prof. Weibo Xia and Prof. Wei Yu (China), Prof. Atsushi Suzuki (Japan), Prof. Fen Lee Hew (Malaysia) and Prof. Leilani B. Mercado-Asis (Philippines).

A further highlight was the signing of IOF Global Patient Charter by participants, calling for the rights of people with osteoporosis to have early assessment and effective management of osteoporosis to prevent primary and secondary fractures.
